• 扎实的概念训练自然支持AMC8/MATHCOUNTS等竞赛

(333 Roosevelt Ave., Pawtucket, RI)

Advanced Math Thinking in Pre-Algebra

A Special Enrichment Course for Middle Schoolers Taught by a University Professor

Build real mathematical understanding (not just faster test-taking).

This year-long Saturday course helps students develop strong pre-algebra foundations by focusing on why math works. Instead of rushing through procedures, we slow down where it matters so students gain clarity, confidence, and long-term problem-solving ability — preparing them for algebra, geometry, and advanced STEM learning.

What Students Learn

Students explore core topics with depth and connections:
- Properties of arithmetic
- Fractions, ratios, and proportional reasoning
- Exponents and number sense
- Equations and inequalities
- Intro number theory (carefully and accessibly)
- Geometry foundations and reasoning

What Makes This Course Different

- Conceptual understanding over memorization: rules make sense, not just "steps to follow"
- Foundation that transfers: students don't just "pass algebra" — they understand it
- Rich topics often skipped in school: especially reasoning and number theory
- Thinking habits for life: logic, precision, curiosity, and mathematical communication

Strong conceptual training also naturally supports contests like AMC 8 and MATHCOUNTS.

Similar content to certain RSM and AoPS programs but at a significantly lower price!

Who It's For

Ideal for grades 6-7 (grades 5 and 8 welcome) — students who:
- Want to understand math deeply, not just finish homework
- Feel school math lacks challenges or skips explanations
- Enjoy thinking, patterns, and "how ideas connect"

Prerequisites: Solid arithmetic; comfort with fractions and decimals. Brief placement check to ensure good fit.

Schedule and Location
- Saturdays, 9:30 - 11:15 AM (two 45-minute sessions + 15-minute break)
- Approximately 30 Saturdays across the school year (starts 9/12/2026, ends in June 2027; no class on holiday weekends)
- In-person: Star Chinese Language School, 333 Roosevelt Ave., Pawtucket, RI

Instructor
Dr. Caiwei Shen, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, UMass Dartmouth. Dr. Shen teaches this course as a passion project to help students build the kind of deep understanding that prevents common STEM struggles later on.
