Registration of New Session of MathCount Program

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Dear Students and Parents,

We had a successful Mathcounts program running from Nov.1, 08 through Feb. 28, 09. The instructor: Matthew Luo has done a wonderful job. His students: Jesse Zhan and Ian Tang made to their respective school Mathcounts teams. Both school team ranked number three and four in last week state competition (Jesse did not participate the competition due to illness. His school team had to compete with alternates).

Now with quite a strong teaching experience, Matthew is planning to continue the program if there is enough response. Again the target students are from 6 to 8 graders. Immediate goal is to prepare the students for the state competition next Spring while learning challenging math skills. The training will basically be three major parts: from Mar. 21 to Jun. 20, 2009, the students will be challenged with the school level problems; Sept. to Dec. 09, the students will be challenged with the regional level problems; Jan. to Feb. 2010, the students will face state level challenges with intensive drills in last week prior to competition just to keep them in good competing status.

Specific proposal for Mar. 21 to Jun. 20, 2009:

  • Class opens to 6th through 8th graders. 5th graders are encouraged to be exposed to the kind of math problems for next year competition. Since we’ll start the program at relatively easy level, it is better to have less skilled students registered this semester than later.
  • Class starting Mar. 28 to Jun. 20, 2009
  • Students will meet 1 and a half hour at normal math class time in Saturdays (specific schedule will be determined later).
  • Class will be conducted in combination of homework, class exercises and discussions.
  • Materials are Mathcounts preparation problems at school level (provided by the teacher in copies).
  • Students are expected to bring their home work to class. No students will be allowed to class without completing his/her homework (this requirement can be replaced with a note from parents/guardians).
  • Class registration begins next Saturday (March 21, 2009) or you can register through responding to this email.
  • Tuition for 13 classes is $150.
  • Students are welcome to have one time try-out

Please send your response to your instructor: Matthew Luo no later than Oct. 24th so we can make decisions whether to start the class on Nov. 1st.
